Emergency Roof Leak? Here’s What to Do in the First Hour

Water is coming into your commercial building. Follow these steps in this order to minimize damage and preserve your insurance claim.

Emergency Roof Leak? Here’s What to Do in the First Hour

First 15 minutes

  • Move inventory and electronics away from the leak
  • Place buckets/plastic under active drips
  • Take photos and video of everything
  • Call your commercial roofer’s emergency line

Next 45 minutes

A qualified roofer should be on-site within 4 hours with tarps and water diversion materials. Do not climb the roof yourself in an active storm — wind gusts on a wet membrane are extremely dangerous. Document the event for your insurance carrier and open a claim within 24 hours.
